Mailbind

Connect Gandi mail to Mailbind

Gandi uses one hostname for incoming and outgoing mail, and the mistake almost everyone makes is leaving the domain off the username.

One hostname for both directions, with the mailbox's own password and the whole address as the username.

Incoming (IMAP)mail.gandi.net993SSL/TLS
Outgoing (SMTP)mail.gandi.net587STARTTLS
Outgoing (SMTP), alternativemail.gandi.net465SSL/TLS

Gandi documents 993 for IMAP over SSL and both 587 with STARTTLS and 465 with SSL for sending; authentication uses the same credentials as the incoming server. Gandi recommends TLS over the older SSL 3.0.

The username is the whole address

Gandi says plainly that a missing domain is the most common cause of a failed login. The username is contact@yourdomain.tld, not contact. The password is the one you set when the mailbox was created — not your Gandi account password, which is a separate thing entirely.

If your domain uses international characters, some clients need its punycode form in the username. Mailbind accepts either, because the address is normalised before it is used.

  • IMAP, POP and SMTP access can each be turned on or off per mailbox in Gandi's webmail settings.
  • Gandi recommends publishing SRV records so clients can discover the servers; Mailbind detects the provider from the MX record instead, which needs nothing extra from you.
  • A Gandi forwarding address has no mailbox and cannot be connected.

Connect Gandi to Mailbind

  1. 1Sign in to Mailbind and choose “Connect a mailbox”.
  2. 2Type the address. Mailbind looks up the domain and names Gandi itself when the records say so; otherwise pick Gandi from the list.
  3. 3Enter your name as you want it to appear on outgoing mail, then enter the mailbox password you set in Gandi, not your Gandi account password.
  4. 4Check the server settings. They are filled in from the preset, and you can edit either side if your account is on a different host.
  5. 5Press “Test and connect”. Mailbind opens IMAP and SMTP before it saves anything, so a wrong password or a blocked port is a message on the form rather than a mailbox that silently never syncs.
  6. 6Name the mailbox for the sidebar, pick a colour, and the first sync begins immediately.

Mailbind only connects to the four ports email uses — 993 and 143 for IMAP, 465 and 587 for SMTP — and refuses private or loopback addresses. If your provider asks for a different port, it cannot be used here.

A registrar mailbox is still a mailbox worth organising

Gandi mailboxes tend to come with a domain somebody bought for one purpose: a side project, a client, an association. They are precisely the addresses that get checked once a week in a webmail tab and then forgotten, which is how a client ends up waiting four days for an answer.

Connecting them to Mailbind is the cheap fix: they join the same list as everything else, Needs-reply triage says which ones are waiting on you, and a reply still leaves from the address the sender wrote to. Nothing moves and nothing is forwarded.

If it does not connect

  • “Invalid credentials”: the username is missing @yourdomain.tld, or the Gandi account password was used.
  • Refused on every port: IMAP access may be disabled for that mailbox in Gandi's webmail settings.
  • Sending refused on 587: use 465 with SSL, which Gandi also documents.
  • An internationalised domain may need its punycode form in older clients.

Common questions

Which password does a Gandi mailbox use?

The mailbox password, set when the address was created and changeable from Gandi's webmail or control panel. The Gandi account password is not accepted.

Is mail.gandi.net used for both directions?

Yes. Gandi documents the same hostname for IMAP and SMTP, with different ports.

Can I connect several Gandi mailboxes?

Yes, one per address. Replies leave from whichever address received the message.

Can Mailbind see my password?

It is encrypted with AES-256-GCM before it is stored, never written to a log and never sent back to a browser. Nobody can read it again, including you.
